Shit Movie of the Day – The Spirit

Well yeah…I don’t know what to say about this movie.  I remember reading Will Eisner’s Golden Age comic and really enjoyed this cult hero in the comic book world, kind of Batman like in a weird way, but also with some wonderful levity to his character.  You could liken The Spirit to Dick Tracy in a sense that they have that wonderful pulp feel to the proceedings.  A fantastic comic series that you should pick up and read.  But if you want to take the cliff notes approach to the series, Frank Miller’s version is pretty much a knock-off cliff notes version of The Spirit.  So if you were take a quiz on this movie from a fan of the series, you would fail and probably be bullied for the rest of your life.  Nerd cred revoked.

Movie Review – Argo

A part of me really was hoping that Argo was going to be a prequel to Die Hard where we got to see how Harry Ellis got to be in the position he was in at the Nakatomi Towers before being tragically killed by Hans Gruber.  A man can dream, but then again the appearance between Ben Affleck in Argo as Tony Mendez and Hart Bochner as Harry Ellis is uncanny.  But I digress and Argo itself deserves to be talked about this awards season.  A captivating tale about a hostage rescue plan that could only be dreamed up in Hollywood, but executed precisely by the CIA.  It’s the sort of story that Hollywood executives would dream of having come up with.

Movie of the Day – Critters

If those Gremlin things went up against the creatures from Critters, I would go with Critters every time.  This is just an insane movie, cheesy, but insane and fun to watch.  I have to really give it up to the USA network during the early 90s cause they just played the hell out of these b-movie classic and Critters, along with all of its sequels, were shown on constant rotation.  The quintessential step-brother to Gremlins, I think this movie is just kickass.  Little furry balls of death that devour anything in their path.  That poor, unsuspecting and typical horror movie setting mid-western town doesn’t know what’s about to come.

Movie of the Day – Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter

The Son of God never seemed cooler until he started hunting vampires.  I am pretty certain that my time in catholic school didn’t cover any of Jesus’ vampire hunting adolescence.  I guess they just wanted to from his birth to his crucifixion in one school year, I would have probably done a lot better in religion class if they taught this.  All I have to say to this is let the power of Christ IMPALE YOU!

Movie of the Day – Event Horizon

A completely underrated sci-fi horror movie, Event Horizon scared the shit out of me when I was teen seeing this in the theater.  Now you might be wondering what a teen was doing in a theater seeing an R-rated horror movie, well it back in the days when people didn’t give a fuck about what kids were and were not able to see.  Sigh, those were the days.

I love me a space horror and Event Horizon brought this eerie feeling of uneasiness about the isolation of space and the unknown element of fear among the crew still gives me the chill.  But sadly, the film was panned all around by critics, but those of us cinephiles managed to looks beyond the horizon and saw a truly, cerebral and terrifying film.

Movie of the Day – The Faculty

Man, I remember this movie being a huge deal when I was a teen.  Everyone was weirdly talking about this movie like it was the be all end all of movies.  I must admit, I did get swept up into seeing this on opening day, mainly cause MTV was promoting the hell out of it and Tommy Hilfiger was sponsoring this movie for some reason, I guess they saw it as an avenue put their clothes on pretty young actors in a high school setting.  Either way, I was and still am, pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy this movie, even after its release in 1998.  It doesn’t hurt that Robert Rodriguez directed this more teen friendly version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Movie of the Day – The Silent House

A horror suspense film that spans 88 minutes and is done in one continuous take.  If that doesn’t get you the least bit curious then I don’t know what will.  Now I want people to realize that this is for the Uruguayan original movie, not for the recent remake with Elizabeth Olsen entitled “Silent House”.  Hollywood is so creative these days.  While the remake is interesting in it’s own right, I definitely want to touch on the original movie since I got a hold of a copy of this movie and well, I was incredibly drawn into the movie and premise that is supposedly based on real events in a small village.  I am not certain if that is true or not, but I was more impressed by witnessing a continuous, one take horror movie.

Movie of the Day – Jason X

You know a franchise is on the rise when they finally make it to space.  I mean all the best horror movies take place in space with Alien, Aliens, Event Horizon and that’s really about it.  I guess I could Leprechaun in Space on this list, but I don’t want to do it, not right away anyways.  But this was really the only logic place that they could take the Jason franchise after he took Manhattan or whatever.  So prepare for a journey into a terribly bad, but entertaining movie.

Movie of the Day – Cabin Fever

So it is October now and that means all thoughts turn towards either Halloween or Christmas.  Thanksgiving is just the waypoint between the two holidays and it’s only good for turkey and sleeping.  So in an effort to spread the cheer and fear of Halloween, I will be posting nothing but horror movies for the Movie of the Day post.  Some will be true horror movies, others will be horrific to me for other reasons.  All will fall within some scope of horror.  So to kick this off, a little Cabin Fever.
