Movie of the Day – Return of the Street Fighter

I have not done a Sonny Chiba movie in ages and the fact that my Sonny Chiba collection Vol. 1 is sitting within eye shot of my desk, scowling at me for not watching some of his amazing movies.  It was an easy choice today in selecting a Chiba flick to talk about or barely talk about since today’s is a sequel to The Street Fighter which is not the Van Damme video game movie, but a pure kick ass martial arts movie.

Movie Review – The Man With The Iron Fists

I couldn’t tell you how excited I was when The Man With The Iron Fists was finally getting made.  Long has it been teased by first time director, Robert “RZA” Diggs, his dream of making a Kung Fu film could only be a true labor of love.  RZA being the myth-maker of The Wu-Tang Clan and collaborator on numerous film projects, all with a Kung Fu lean and most notably with Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, set out to make a throwback to the films that influenced his life.  A mix of wuxia, Shaw Brothers Kung Fu films and a penchant for all things beautifully absurd about the films he grew up with, The Man With The Iron Fists is ambitious and grandiose, but there in lies the problem with the film.

Movie of the Day – Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter

The Son of God never seemed cooler until he started hunting vampires.  I am pretty certain that my time in catholic school didn’t cover any of Jesus’ vampire hunting adolescence.  I guess they just wanted to from his birth to his crucifixion in one school year, I would have probably done a lot better in religion class if they taught this.  All I have to say to this is let the power of Christ IMPALE YOU!

Movie of the Day – Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

Time for another so bad it’s good movie and I am so happy for today’s selection.  While I enjoy talking about great movies that are worthy of the time I take to talk about them, I do love to expend a little bit of energy on terribly shitty, but surprisingly entertaining movies.  Today’s is a sequel, maybe prequel, what ever the fuck it is.  All I know is that if you are basing a franchise off of a fighting game, you are going to fail spectacularly.  This movie was no exception but the greatest moments from this movie come from one actor who just beautifully articulates that shitty script and over serious acting talents.  That actor is Chris Klein.  Oh are you all in for a treat.

Movie of the Day – Gymkata

This is a classic.  Don’t let anyone ever tell you different about this movie.  Take it from a guy who clearly has seen too many movies in his lifetime, Gymkata is one of the finest martial art movies to have graced the screen in a long time.  A vehicle for gymnast Kurt Thomas, Gymkata is the deadly showcase of gymnastics inspired martial arts, which you can see displayed in such an awesome manner in the trailer.  It’s a movie that cult classic and terrible movie lovers have to see if they haven’t and if they did see it, then they know true peace and balance in their life.  Let’s vault over this shit pommel horse and check out the deadliest movie ever, Gymkata!

Movie of the Day – Double Dragon

Holy.  Shit.  What the fuck?  I have never seen trailer that just is more incoherent than the actual movie it is showcasing.  I don’t even know what this movie is about judging solely from the trailer and that’s not a good thing.  I guess they were just banking on the fact that teens would have recognized the name of the movie and then immediately think of the arcade game Double Dragon.  Lord and the trailer music, what the hell is that?  Geez, well you know me folks and my love of awesome movies and bad movies and this definitely falls between the two categories.  Prepare for an onslaught of hyper colored 90s settings, decent action sequences, Alyssa Milano looking extra sexy and Robert Patrick with a hideous high top white hair cut.

Also Scott Wolf is an action star apparently.

Movie of the Day – Revenge of the Ninja

You know, Enter the Ninja was so damn good that I decided to give you all a second helping of ninja with an unofficial sequel to Enter the Ninja.  If there is one thing Hollywood loves, it’s sequelizing the hell out of movies.  This is no exception to yesterday’s love fest as Revenge of the Ninja is about as balls out crazy as the first movie of the trilogy.  Yes I said trilogy as there is another movie called Ninja III: The Domination, but I just want to focus on the even crazier sequel Revenge of the Ninja cause there is more sword clanging, ninja star throwing, and ninja goodness that you won’t believe.  I would venture to say that despite the absence of an amazing death scene, Revenge of the Ninja is the equivalent The Dark Knight in terms of sequel success.  Yeah that’s right, this movie is the Dark Knight of the ninja franchise.

Movie of the Day – Mortal Kombat

MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!

I remember when this movie came out and I had to go see it with my gamer friends.  I mean I was like 10 at the time and my parents drove us to go see a movie in which the premise is about Earth’s best fighters fighting ninja’s or whatever in a fight to the death.  I was excited that yet another fighting video game getting the big screen treatment, but after Street Fighter showed no one fighting in the street or whatever, this movie looked like it had all the dark marking of the video game I played for hours on end, but with none the fatalities.

Once that opening yell of MORTAL KOMBAT came over the speakers, I just buckled up and prepared to watch a video game come to life.

Movie of the Day – The Raid: Redemption

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!

If the trailer above doesn’t even entice you in the least, then stop reading and go watch some kid movies.  The Raid: Redemption is by far and away one of the best action films of the year period.  This is a film in which the hype matched the content of this movie and surpassed all my expectations going into this movie.  This is an action film fans wet dream, the sort of thing that makes the regular readers of Soldier of Fortune magazine blush when they witness a film that brings together fantastic gun play, acrobatic fight scenes and no holds barred, gritty, visceral attitude to a pure action film.  Grow a set and read on!
