Movie of the Day – Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians

I decided to back into the vault of Documentary films that I have talked about since starting this blog, more so in preparation for yet another year of True False Fest, which I can’t wait to attend again next month.  Holy Rollers was actually a documentary I saw at our local KC film festival and surprisingly one of my favorite movies that showed during that fest, next to Take Shelter and Like Crazy.  Holy Rollers combines two of my favorite things, moral code bending Christians with loose interpretations of the Bible and how they justify what they are doing and morally bankrupt gambling.  Sweet!

Movie of the Day – Dead Alive

To think, there was a time before The Hobbit, before King Kong and before The Lord of the Rings Trilogy when Peter Jackson wasn’t making this major blockbusters and employing half of New Zealand  he was actually making schlocky, over the top horror movies.  I mean I loved The Frighteners, like a lot, but it’s is amazing to see Peter Jackson’s earlier work, something a lot of people wouldn’t associate with his current body of work.  But for me, he will always be the guy who made a priest kick ass for the lord.  Today’s post is the ultra bloody affair, Dead Alive.

Movie of the Day – Troll 2 / Best Worst Movie

The documentary teaser trailer hinted at this movie and today I dive into one of the best worst movies ever made.  Troll 2 is the cult phenomenon that dominates the late night cinema crowd, the ones that crave for something ridiculous in their film watching.  It is, for a lack of a better term, horrible.  It is just down right terrible, but that terribleness translates into a magical cinematic experience that spawned the documentary Best Worst Movie, which looks at the making and following that the film created.  Best Worst Movie is a wonderful companion piece to today’s movie, Troll 2.

Let’s get this shit started!

Movie of the Day – Best Worst Movie

Well my computer kept crapping out on me and WordPress was being wonky, so my efforts to get a post out was basically the most difficult things ever.  So I will truncate my post this evening and just leave you with a teaser for tomorrow as today’s post is a special two part post.  So I leave you with Best Worst Movie.  Tomorrow’s post will elaborate more on this gem and the movie that it is talking about.

Enjoy folks!

Movie of the Day – Celeste and Jesse Forever

This post is a bit of a cheat since this movie isn’t out until sometime next week, but I just have to bring this movie back up because I really feel it didn’t get the love it should have by the movie going audience.  Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg turned in mesmerizing performance, more so Rashida as she is the lynch pin of the film, in a romantic drama that honestly is one of the more accurate and earnest romance movies out there.  It isn’t so much a lovely dovey film, but rather a movie that tries to depict the struggles of moving on, of course while some indie music plays and Jones radiates on screen with her loveable personality.  Sigh, much like Beginners, I really hold this to be a perfect little romance movie.

Movie of the Day – The American Scream

I will admit, as I have done many times over the course of writing on this blog of mine, that I am not a big big horror fan.  Horror movies are not my jam and the amount that I watch horror movies dwarfed by an average horror movie watcher.  That much is certain, but I have particular tastes when it comes to the scares, blood, gore, and other aesthetics of the genre.  That lack of horror movie watching even extends to Halloween itself, where I hand out candy from time to time and will dress in costume on occasion.  Maybe it’s because I don’t have that passion for the holiday or genre that reflects said holiday, but I will tell you what, I am glad there are people out there like the one’s in today’s post who embrace their love of the spirit and holiday.  The American Scream is a scary, lovely, labor of love.
