Movie of the Day – Heavyweights

All my time of watching movies have given me numerous life lessons.  In particular, I have learned a lot about the camping experience.  I have found that there are three types of camping scenarios:

  1. The typical sex romp camping experience where the counselors are banging other counselors and the campers are promiscuous little devils
  2. The camp that has some sort of supernatural experience and campers start getting murdered
  3. The camp experience that involves the combining of numbers 1 and 2 to satisfy two demographics, and lastly
  4. The fat kid/loser camp.

I am certain you can tell be the trailer and title which sort of camp experience this will be.  Heavyweights for me, is probably one of the best camping movies of all time.  I don’t give a shit about Friday the 13th and the murder rampage that went on or some other generic comedy, this is what it’s about.  Let’s start Perkisizing suckers!

All of the kids at Camp Hope have a weight problem. It is the one place they can go without feeling different. But when the previous owners declare bankruptcy, the camp is purchased by an obnoxious fitness freak who becomes obsessed with changing his chubby charges into budding body builders. He immediately begins serving them low calorie foods and subjecting them to rigorous exercises. Part of his motivation is greed: he is in the process of writing a book, and filming an infomercial on weight loss. The boys at camp rebel and mayhem ensues. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This is one of Ben Stillers best roles.  I can’t tell you how often I will throw out a Tony Perkis quote from time to time as he is the ultimate villain in this movie.  A megalomaniac who wants to use the camp and the kids to sell his fitness program and throughout the movie he slowly loses his nerve.   I can begin to tell you how funny his character is and short of Zoolander (yeah I know) this is by far his best character.

Even while Stiller shines as the main role of the movie, the cast of side characters all bring together some funny moments.  Lars, Perkis’ right hand man, gets to belt out a couple of funny quips and riffs on the fat campers.  The campers all bring a certain set of comedic skills and diversity that liven up the camp and give it characters all the while trying to defeat Tony Perkis and his insane program.

The movie also has a strong message in between fat jokes and Perkisisms.  The campers are comfortable with themselves as people and can do great things, it’s just that people treat as if they can’t.  It doesn’t make the case that obesity or childhood obesity is funny or okay for that matter, but that with some hard and self confidence they can do anything.  It’s a Disney movie so that message needs to be in there, lest they want to lose their core demographic.  You have to do yourself a favor and watch this movie.  You get to see Stiller at his best and it’s genuinely funny.

I remember this movie! It was wicked funny. Good choice.

The only thing the movie was missing was Patrick Renna (Ham from The Sandlot). It had all the rest of the fat child actors from the 1990s. He was probably being a diva.
