Movie of the Day – Dawn of the Dead

You know all this talk of raptures, raptors, apocalypse and other such ramblings got me hoping for a good old fashioned zombie apocalypse.  If anything, that is something I would be most prepared for instead of saying apocalyptic weather and that whole fire from the sky thing.  I got my trusty dog, a nice back pack with supplies and a nice heavy club (melee weapons don’t need reloading, think about it).  So being in the festive mood that I am will keep this short and too the point.

If you are a zombie aficionado then I won’t need to explain the plot of this movie.  If you aren’t, well then here is the abridged version:  Zombies walk the Earth and a group of civilians take refuge in a shopping mall to hold out against the onslaught of the undedad.  All this mall doubles as a metaphor for the zombie like consumerism that has taken over the US during the late 70’s.  So there ya go and to be honest, a mall would be a decent place to hold up in, but far too many entry points for potential zombies to come in through.

This is Romero’s finest zombie movie, before he started taking that whole social commentary message and driving into the ground (thanks Diary of the Dead).  I love this movie for the pioneering special effects in makeup and gore.  You got to give major props to Tom Savini for working with the budget and constraints that he had.  He was able to craft some fairly memorable scenes of zombie violence and practically catapulted the the bar for gore and content.  There was something thought that was eerie about the makeup and blood that gave it this whole dreamlike quality.  The grays and blues of the zombies meshed with the bright red blood made for a almost stark and unrealistic quality to it.

I could literally continue gushing like an arterial spray from a zombie bite about this movie.  Suffice to say that this movie makes me size up every building that I go into for its potential ability to stave off a zombie apocalypse.  Romero I salute you.
