Movie of the Day – Mother

Happy Mothers Day!  What an appropriate pick for a day when you show your mom how much you appreciate them and thank them for all that they have done for you in your life.  If this movie is any indication of what lengths your mom will go to help you in your life, then you have a psychotic, but loving mother.

Mother is a fairly straightforward plot line, where a Mothers son is framed for a murder and she takes it upon herself to find the killer and bring him to justice.  Nothing more needs to be said about the plot line, but Bong Joon-ho crafts a masterful story and superb tension in Mother.  Bong Joon-ho is one of my favorite South Korean directors, especially since he gave us “Memories of a Murder” and “The Host”.  He has an eye for detail and crafting tense scenes of suspense.  Every one of his movies is engaging and the characters that fill the movie are fantastic.

Bong Joon-ho has a wonderful eye for framing his scenes of violence to enhance the tension.  Although violence is sometimes off screen, the setup and execution of the scenes by the main actress playing the frail mother amplifies the acts of violence.  Kim Hye-ja, who plays the mother, is phenomenal in her role.  Caring and unwavering in her attempts to free her son and dispense justice, you sympathize for her plight and caring for her only son.  Don’t mind the fact that Hye-ja goes into blind fits of murderous rage, Hye-ja deserves serious credit for making this movie what it is.  As a viewer of the movie, you needed to not only believe that Hye-ja is a caring and loving mother, but that she become this grim killer.  I was blown away by her performance and with Bong Joon-ho’s direction and writing made Hye-ja all the more visceral.

This is not a Mother’s Day movie you should watch with your mother.  In fact, show her something like Chocolat or Don’t Throw Momma From The Train, she might enjoy those more.  Mother is available on Netflix Instant Stream.
